Evolve Classical Pilates, Purely Pilates and East Bay Pilates are excited to offer a weekend of events with Classical Pilates Master Teacher Bob Liekens. Each studio will be offering the chance of semi-privates as well as a host of workshops. It’s a great opportunity to kick of the New Year with a Powerhouse of activities!
About Bob Liekens
Bob, originally from Belgium, traveled to New York City in 1983 to further explore his dance career. That same year, he started his Pilates training at The Pilates Studio under the tutelage of Romana Kryzanowska. Fascinated by the Graham technique, he initially pursued studies at the Graham Center for Contemporary Dance. In 1991, he became one of the first certified teachers in the technique. Subsequently, he taught for two years at the school. In 1986 Romana invited Bob to teach the Pilates method. Starting in 1993, he was instrumental in building her teacher-trainer certification program. He co-created the training manual and originated the current exam system. Bob has been invited, both nationally and internationally, to conduct teacher-training seminars, workshops, and continuing education programs. In September 2000 he became a director at Power Pilates and played an integral part in the creation of the Power Pilates Teacher Training Certification Programs. Currently Bob is working independently. Bob also practices yoga and in 1999 became a certified yoga teacher. He has been with us before both teaching at the studio and attending art classes at a local art academy in Belmont. We are thrilled that he will join us again on the west coast.

Workshop Descriptions
The Power House Actions at East Bay Pilates
The concept of Power House came to fruition over the years through Romana’s teaching. It is a widely used term among Pilates’ enthusiasts. However, many clients as well as teachers are not clear on what it actually entitles. Instructions like "use your Power House" are not understood, therefore often making it hard to execute. How about turning this static concept into a dynamic action? In this workshop, Bob will progress you through a concise "working from your Power House"! This will provide the teacher with the verbs to instruct direction, thus, the client is empowered to take action. We will work with these instructional tools both on the Reformer and Mat.
Archival Equipment Workshop at Purely Pilates
In this workshop Bob will review the small archival pieces of equipment that are often under utilized in Classical Pilates training today. This equipment includes items such as the guillotine, baby chair, toe corrector and breathicizer. In this workshop you will see how to use the archival pieces and how they relate to other exercises within the Classical Pilates repertoire. This is a hands-on opportunity exploring both teaching concepts of the archival pieces as well as execution of the exercises.
Touch Cue Actions Workshop at Purely Pilates
This workshop is designed to help the teacher understand how to bring the client into a stronger comprehension of the “how to do the exercise.” Sometimes a touch cue is about safety or protecting the client, other times is about a challenge or initiation cue. There are cues that are appropriate for beginners and others for more advanced practitioners. How do we provide clear touch cues to give the client the correct message? A variety of different teaching cue applications will be examined. There will be a mix of lecture and practice with Bob observing and giving corrections in this workshop.
Super Advanced Reformer Workshop at Evolve Classical Pilates in Los Altos
This workshop is designed to review the advanced reformer exercises. Key elements such as minimum of motion for transitions, archival exercises such as balance control step off and Russian squats, in addition to a review of headstands and the order or sequence of exercises. This is a hands-on workshop where you will learn and practice both doing and teaching the advanced reformer exercises.
